Clean Hands, Healthier World

Recycle Soap

We proudly support Eco-Soap’s mission to reduce soap waste by recycling soap scraps into new bars and distributing them to those who need them most.

Lack of access to soap is a critical factor in fighting the spread of preventable diseases worldwide, and is a modern day challenge in Cambodia. Eco-Soap Bank seeks to address this critical need for hygiene and has sustainably supplied more than 10.7 million people with soap and hygiene education since 2015.

Recycling Soap, Transforming Lives

By recycling soap, Eco-Soap Bank is not only reducing waste but also creating a healthier and more sustainable future for vulnerable communities. Soap factories globally generate about 25,000 metric tons of soap waste each year, which go directly to landfills. This waste contributes to environmental issues, and Eco-Soap Bank’s work is crucial in mitigating these harmful impacts.

Eco-Soap Bank addresses this issue by employing women across Africa and Asia to collect and recycle soap scraps, transforming them into new bars. This process reduces environmental impact and provides economic opportunities for women, who also become hygiene ambassadors in their communities.

The organisation distributes the recycled soap to those who need it most:

  • 3 billion people do not have access to soap at home.
  • 800 million children do not have access to soap at schools.

Eco-Soap Bank’s initiatives have been proven to increase hand-washing at key events by as much as 72% and reduce the risk of preventable illnesses (diarrhoea, respiratory illness, fever, etc.) by up to 43%.

Environmental Impact

The soap industry’s waste contributes to environmental challenges like climate change and freshwater scarcity. Soap factories discard large amounts of usable soap scraps annually, leading to a substantial environmental footprint. Soap production involves resource-intensive processes that generate waste. For example, producing one kilogram of bar soap generates around 1.6 kg of CO2e and consumes 4.48 lires of freshwater. Eco-Soap Bank reduces this impact by collecting and recycling soap scraps, preventing them from going to landfills. This lessens the demand for resource extraction and energy-intensive manufacturing, lowering emissions and freshwater consumption. Eco-Soap Bank’s model addresses environmental concerns and promotes sustainability by providing hygiene products to vulnerable populations and creating economic opportunities for women.
